Be careful. The first time my friends and I tried to come here, they were closed. And I had made a reservation! You'd think that if they were going to be closed, they would not have let me make a reservation. And, if the decision to be closed, they should call people who made reservations to let them know.

We did end up going a few months after that incident. It didn't make enough of an impact for me to want to go back, but my food was decent. The Tortilla soup was surprisingly filling, despite the fact that there wasn't much in it and it had the consistency of tomato basil soup. I didn't have a bad dining experience, but wouldn't recommend the place.

For Mexican Independence Day, we planned to have brunch here: http://www.papatzul.com/. However, they were only serving two items. We attempted a place around the corner, but there was a 25 minute wait. Then, we tried another place across the street, but they were all out of quiche (what two of us wanted to eat)! Finally, we decided to go to La Palapa, an old favorite. This was my first time at the West Village location. Surprisingly, I had never ordered the Huevos Rancheros. I've come to realize that Huevos Rancheros are probably one of the least photogenic cuisines. Even though this picture doesn't look great, the flavor was excellent - just the right amount of spiciness and all the right Huevos Rancheros ingredients (tortillas, egg, avocado, beans, sauce). I like the atmosphere more at the East Village location, but the food is equilavent at both places.

Would you even know these are huevos rancheros? The ingredients were all separate and I was unsure of how to eat it. Also, the eggs were scrambled, which is not typical of huevos rancheros. It was like making my own breakfast buritto. It tasted good, but didn't have quite as much flavor as it should. Also, I've had better tortillas. An "insider tip" is that the tables outside slant, so be careful & make sure your dishes don't slide off the table!

This place was delicious. I don't remember anything particular about this soup (i.e., too spicy, too salty, too runny, etc), which probably means there was nothing wrong with it! I'm deciding whether I prefer tortilla soup with or without the chicken.
